GPT-5 to Launch with 1.5 Trillion Parameters, Canvas Functionality

SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI is set to release GPT-5, its latest and most powerful AI model, in summer 2025, boasting 1.5 trillion parameters, as well as a new Canvas feature.

GPT-5 to Launch with 1.5 Trillion Parameters, Canvas Functionality

Announced Monday, April 14, 2025, at the company’s headquarters, the move is designed to revolutionize how users communicate with AI. The model’s exciting capabilities include better reasoning and a workspace for both writing and coding.

A Giant Step Forward

GPT-5, codenamed Orion, has 1.5 trillion parameters, dwarfing what was generally estimated to be 1 trillion parameters for GPT-4. This colossal size helps the model better comprehend complicated questions and provide more intelligent responses. According to OpenAI, GPT-5 will outshine when it comes to math, coding and creative writing tasks. The Canvas feature, a side-by-side workspace, allows users to edit text, or code, ensemble, easing up projects.

The Canvas tool is an update to a beta that rolled out with GPT-4o in October 2024. It opens a window beside the chat interface where people can adjust drafts or debug code instead of having to start from scratch. A writer, say, can modify a blog post’s tone, while a coder can quickly correct bugs. OpenAI trained GPT-5 to automatically activate Canvas when it sees you doing things such as writing or coding.

Why It Matters

AI models such as GPT-5 are reshaping sectors from education to software development. With its large parameter count, GPT-5 could have engaged in nuanced conversations more effectively than ever. It could lead to fewer errors, or “hallucinations,” that plagued earlier models. The Canvas feature is aimed at professionals and provides a space to collaborate with AI on reports, apps or stories, similar to Google Docs but with AI smarts.

OpenAI faces fierce competition from rivals such as Anthropic and Google. Anthropic has a similar tool, Artifacts, available for its Claude model. Yet OpenAI’s C.E.O. Sam Altman has faith. “He will feel like a real partner, not just a tool” at his service, he said Monday at a press event. The company says Canvas is meant to distinguish GPT-5 by making the feeling of “AI work” feel effortless.

Challenges and Context

GPT-5 required immense computing power to train, reportedly running on mega-computers from Microsoft Azure. This would entail gathering large quantities of data from public feeds and partnerships starting from mid-2024. OpenAI trained GPT-5 to align the goals of the model with those of humans using reinforcement learning, improving safety and accuracy of outputs. Teachers suggest students start out with smaller models before grad students attempt larger ones.

The AI race is heating up. Google’s Gemini and Meta’s LLaMA are moving in and forcing OpenAI to move fast. GPT-5’s Canvas feature is a response to demand for something useful rather than yet another chatbot. OpenAI has dominated the market since the debut of ChatGPT in 2022, but staying ahead requires features that save time and enhance creativity.

What’s Next for GPT-5?

With the launch of GPT-5, our work and learning could also be transformed. Its reasoning abilities may assist students with problem-solving or allow businesses to automate complex processes. For writers and coders, Canvas could turn AI into an essential teammate that shaves hours off project schedules. But OpenAI needs to rewrite some code and make the app available to everyone, not only to premium subscribers, for this to work.

As per OpenAI’s roadmap, free users may receive GPT-5 sometime in late 2025, following the release of Pro and Team tiers. It intends to add video processing and more expansive searching capabilities, turning GPT-5 into an AI mall. For now, developers can try it through APIs, creating apps that harness its power. As summer approaches, the tech world is holding its breath to see whether GPT-5 is all it’s cracked up to be.

Broader impacts loom large. If it reduces errors and increases productivity, GPT-5 could upend job markets of all kinds, from coding to content creation. But questions of bias and misuse remain. OpenAI had to weigh innovation against safety, particularly as regulators set their sights on AI’s expansion. Whether it will be a game-changer or just another chapter in the AI race will be revealed in the coming months.
